If you are new to scrapbooking, you may be overwhelmed by the
many types of embellishments. You also may not have the nerve
to try something new simply because you don’t know how easy some of
these embellishments are attached. Here is some help:
Attaching an Eyelet
Eyelets are favorites in scrapper’s tool kits and are as varied
in shape and color as the uses for them. In addition to
joining elements together, eyelets can be used to anchor ribbon and
fiber, hang charms, attach label holders, hinges and much, much
more. It’s easy to see why learning how to set them is a
definite scrapbooking essential.
Use an anywhere or hand-held hole punch to create a hole that suit’s
the eyelet size (ie., 1/16” hole for a micro eyelet, 1/8” for
traditional, and ¼” for larger sizes). Insert the eyelet into
the hole from the front. Flip the cardstock and eyelet
over so the back of the paper and ‘raw’ side of the eyelet are
facing up. Place on a self-healing mat or similar surface.
Position the tip of the eyelet setter so that it rests securely in
the center of the eyelet at a 90 degree angle. Use a hammer to
tap the back of the setter a few times until the back of the eyelet
splits and flattens. Variation --- some manufacturers offer
hammerless hand-held and table top tools or presses designed to set
eyelets
with minimal noise and effort. A few versions can
punch a hole and set the eyelet in a single step.
Attaching a Brad
Brads are fasteners that are an easy way to affix page elements
with a decorative flair.
Punch a hole (large enough to accommodate the brad’s prongs without
tearing the paper too much) into the cardstock. (HINT:
for mini brads, a small hole punch with a paper piercer will
suffice.) Push the brad through the hole. Flip the
cardstock over and flare the brad’s prongs, butterfly style, and
press flat. Secure with a piece of tape if desired.
Place the cardstock face up on a flat surface and press down on the
top of the brad to completely flatten.
Attaching a Hinge
From the hardware store to the scrapbook store shelves, hinges
have come a long way, and it is easy to see why. Hinges are
perfect for connecting and attaching items, often allowing them to
conceal additional photos, journaling or other design elements.
Using a brad or eyelet, attach the hinge to the top photo or
element. Place the element where you would like it to rest and
attach the other half of the hinge with adhesive dots or metal glue.
(HINT: you can attach the bottom half with a fastener, but it
may prevent the flap from lying flat if it’s too dimensional.)
